Kefir is a fermented dairy product that is similar to thin drinkable yogurt. It is made by adding kefir grains to milk and allowing it to ferment overnight, producing lots of beneficial probiotic bacteria and yeast. If you have kefir grains then you can make kefir at home, but it is also becoming more easily available in supermarkets and health food stores.

While kefir can be drunk plain, blending it with other ingredients makes it even more delicious. Combining it with antioxidant-rich bilberries and dietary fibre-rich peaches turns it into a delicious summery smoothie.

Bilberry, Peach and Kefir Smoothie

(makes 1 ½ cups)

1 sachet Berryfect bilberry powder

1 ripe peach

1 ripe banana

½ cup of kefir

¼ cup of water

1-2 tsp honey (according to taste)

4-5 ice cubes

  1. Wash your peach and cut it (unpeeled) into large chunks or slices, discarding the seed in the centre.
  2. Add all ingredients into the blender. The amount of honey you use will depend on how ripe and sweet your fruit is.
  3. Blend until smooth.
  4. Serve immediately.
